I-194 Initiative Funded in Part by Dark Money

Last Friday, June 19 was the last day for supporters of Montana ballot initiatives to turn in the petitions needed to qualify their issue for the November election. Supporters of I-194, “The Montana Plan,” say they’ve gathered plenty of signatures, which will now need to be certified by the MT Secretary of State. The Montana Chamber of Commerce has concerns with the language in this initiative, especially as it would prohibit Montana businesses and nonprofits from participating in the political process.

The Montana Free Press recently reported on the irony in this effort: much of the initiative’s funding has come from a nonprofit that does not have to disclose its donors, the very thing the initiative aims to curb.
