The Navajo Transitional Energy Company’s Spring Creek Mine in Big Horn County, Montana is now facing an unprecedented challenge following decades of attack.
In response, the Department of the Interior is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that will determine the future of the mine. The Draft EIS has been released (found here) for public review, but unfortunately, THREE of the four plan alternatives put the future of the mine in jeopardy.
The mine provides 265 jobs with an average salary of nearly $120,000. This is a significant economic driver in a small community where the average salary is $20,000. The revenue to the state and local community keeps the schools operating and emergency services running, but also provides incalculable benefits by allowing families to stay in the region where opportunities are increasingly limited. Spring Creek Mine operates safely and continues to set the standard for world-class reclamation.
This is your only opportunity to comment and counter the stacked deck and raise your voice in support of this vital community asset.
