HELENA — The U.S. Manufacturing Institute announced they will award Wendy Koster, general manager of Diversified Plastics, Inc. in Missoula, with the Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award.

The STEP Ahead Awards honor women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers and represent all levels of the manufacturing industry, from the factory-floor to the C suite.

“It is a true honor and responsibility to be a recipient of the STEP Award, in addition to being unexpected,” Koster said. “It is always nice to be recognized for hard work, but the STEP Award is also meant to inspire others. The manufacturing industry in the United States is in need of many intelligent minds and creative innovators. Opportunities for women are everywhere. My best hope of influencing the next generation of women in manufacturing is through my general manager work at Diversified Plastics Inc., modeling caring leadership and influence in a very male-dominated world. The STEP Award helps send the message that there is plenty of opportunity for the best minds and talents of both genders here.”

Diversified Plastics, Inc. is a full-service plastic injection parts manufacturer providing prototyping, manufacturing and assembly.

The STEP Ahead Awards are part of the larger STEP Ahead initiative, launched to examine and promote the role of women in the manufacturing industry through recognition, research, and leadership for attracting, advancing, and retaining strong female talent. In five years, STEP Ahead Award winners have impacted more than 300,000 individuals—from peers in the industry to school-aged children.

“Diversified Plastics, Inc. has been a great member of the Montana Manufacturing Association, and Wendy has been a great leader in the company over the years,” said Cary Hegreberg, executive director of the Montana Manufacturing Association, a subsidiary of the Montana Chamber of Commerce. “We were honored to nominate Wendy and 11 other outstanding Montana female leaders in the manufacturing industry for this award. The Montana Manufacturing Association is thrilled to see such a great Montanan and leader in the manufacturing community recognized at the national level. Congratulations to Wendy and Diversified Plastics, Inc.”

On April 11, The Manufacturing Institute will recognize 130 recipients of the STEP Ahead Awards at a reception in Washington, D.C. The STEP Ahead Awards program will highlight each honoree’s story, including their leadership and accomplishments in manufacturing.
